Fairly sure Google haven't said they are closing down Jaiku at all. They are open-sourcing the code and leaving the current team to tinker on their own time. So not a lot has really changed other than the righteous news about the source.
The service remains whilst i) the community utilise it and ii) google keep on paying for the app engine hosting I guess.

@gerrymoth I don't see Google as having thrown it away at all. I think from a business perspective it's potentially a very smart move. There are a huge number of microblogging services in the market now. They are costly to develop and maintain especially as the space is not well defined; by that I mean no one really knows what exactly people want and need out of such a service.
So the problem facing Google is do they spend vast amounts on what is essentially a research project or let the community undertake the research allowing the service to grow organically to meet needs.
I know which way I would go.
Community driven projects have a long track record of success. Google runs a huge amount of their service on open-source platforms, the majority of web servers are still open-source based.
Does this mean Jaiku will survive as a service - who knows. I certainly hope so as it had such great potential. But more to the point I firmly believe that by allowing everyone to see underneath the hoods will lead to better, more robust and more timely set of micro-blogging and aggregation services in months/years to come.

Okay rolling one's own Jaiku has a number of benefits but to me the big and rather wonderful thing here is that given Jaiku is being maintained out of love open-sourcing it will most likely lead to further innovation and from the community rather than leaving it all to a few.
This is massive people.

I'm finding it harder and harder to follow Jaiku as my balance of conversation has definately moved to the blue channel. Yet I miss the more personal side of my Jaiku friends immensely.
Sadly I can't see Google going anywhere with Jaiku development quickly, especially after Jyri's last updates on the subject.
It'll happen, but will it be too late to save what was once the greatest of the online micro-blogging sites -- who knows?

Okay grabbed an hour and followed the instructions atop for OSX install and got somewhere. Started the install and checked some of the customize options, forgot the Eee specific ones so tried to restart realising I had already borked the WinXP partition (intentional as this is a spare drive). Restart = Fail.
HP utility is my next option. Want to get the install ISO onto an bootable SD card and run install from there.
