Surely I'm not the only one who thinks this open source move is a great leap forward?

No you're not. I'm ready to scream if I see even one more line along the lines "Jaiku is dead".

Create your own Jaiku with Google Code, wow great, why not just sure Google Connect or whatever its called. Jaiku.com as a site will die as the core community are all leaving. I commented on this before Christmas saying I'd noticed less posts on Jaiku and more on Twitter from the same people!

Okay rolling one's own Jaiku has a number of benefits but to me the big and rather wonderful thing here is that given Jaiku is being maintained out of love open-sourcing it will most likely lead to further innovation and from the community rather than leaving it all to a few.

    This is massive people.

@gerrymoth: how can you be so sure the domain name and the site is going to die?

An Open Source code base for Jaiku is something we could use for a corporate communications tool.

Maybe I'm fanning the flames, its just I loved jaiku from the 1st time I used it and it got me totaly hooked on social networking, but I'm just disappointed in this announcement as I was full expecting Google to take Jaiku onboard, but they have just throuwn it away by saying let the community develop it.

@barneyc You're not the only one. Google could have killed it. Instead they're giving it back to us

@gerrymoth I don't see Google as having thrown it away at all. I think from a business perspective it's potentially a very smart move. There are a huge number of microblogging services in the market now. They are costly to develop and maintain especially as the space is not well defined; by that I mean no one really knows what exactly people want and need out of such a service.

So the problem facing Google is do they spend vast amounts on what is essentially a research project or let the community undertake the research allowing the service to grow organically to meet needs.

I know which way I would go.

Community driven projects have a long track record of success. Google runs a huge amount of their service on open-source platforms, the majority of web servers are still open-source based.

Does this mean Jaiku will survive as a service - who knows. I certainly hope so as it had such great potential. But more to the point I firmly believe that by allowing everyone to see underneath the hoods will lead to better, more robust and more timely set of micro-blogging and aggregation services in months/years to come.

uau! what can happen while one sleeps!

my POV is that the jaiku system is way better then identica (but misses something like identispy [former tracku], and #hashtags)

i think its great, as long as it takes up. now, supposing everything opens p a bit, we can start incorporating jaiku seriously into seminars, meetups, websites etc.

we just need now a bunch of users/devs that are willing to set up a PAE with the code and maintained it for/with the community
